Now how did the name of Ceefa came about? She was from the third litter I bred and I was trying to find names beginning with C. Whilst musing on names I was saying C for, C for.....and eureka a name was born! Well, if I thought I was going to breed another like her mother how wrong was I? If she had been a stick of rock she would have 'stubborn' written right through her. I thought she would never learn to stop chasing hare. On the grouse moors someone only had to shout 'Hare', she was off and invariably found it and chased it. Send her for a retrieve......if a rabbit had passed across the scent it would just draw her away. But, four years on she began to listen to the whistle and retrieve like a dream. She gained a Certificate of Merit in an All Aged field trial then gained a first in a Novice trial.
Rather than prolong the agony of trialling I decided to retire her and she became the best picking up dog you could ask for. As she had done with the hare, you only had to say 'pricked bird' and she was away. Her best ever retrieve was on a bird that glided some 300 yards then went into a plantation out of sight. Five minutes later she was on her way back with the bird. Marvellous. Her funniest moment on a retrieve was on the shoot while she was chasing a hare, a pheasant was shot, she returned with the bird to everyone's delight. I have been reminded of that story for years by the guns. It always brings a smile to my face. Another habit she had as a picking up dog was not retrieving the birds to me but presenting them to the gun that shot them. Often she wouldn't sit with me behind the guns but would pick her own spot some 50 yards away if she thought it better.
In 2001 Ceefa and I were invited by a television company together with 30 other different dog breeds to take part in a programme called 'Man Meets Dog' with Philippa Forrester. This was a days shooting on Brean Sands near Western- Super- Mare. What a great day of frolics on the beach!
She produced 1 litter.
