'Indy' was short for 'Independence' as he was born on the 4th July - America's Independence Day. The first thing to say about Indy was
that he had a 'typical Germanic Weimaraner head', as I was told by a German Weimaraner owner. 'Where are the aristocratic heads today'
she complained. This is something I have tried to bear in mind when breeding. They say never keep two pups from the same litter (he was
the brother to Liberty Belle) because they could be difficult to train. I was beginning to think so, but his sister was so easy to train compared to
him that it wasn't an issue but two pups together is not to be recommended. Indy decided that life was just for fun and for the first three years he didn't want to co-operate when it came to training. It really wasn't until he was 3 years old that he put an adult head on and began to respond. If it hadn't been for Libby coming into season and the fact I wanted to attend a Weimaraner Gundog Working Test, I would not have turned my thoughts to Indy to do some intense training that I discovered that Indy was now ready. He had one week to get into shape and his progress over that time was phenomenal. He absorbed so much because now he wanted to and alas, he was not quite good enough for a place at the test. He took over from the girls when they were indisposed to work on the local shoots in the beaters line which he did with panache. I will never understand how he managed to find birds when the wind was not in his favour, but off he would go having got a whiff from somewhere and he would find it. He was a determined hunter, a good gamefinder and a staunch pointer. He sired 3 litters to working bitches.
