My one in a million Weimaraner - Liberty Belle. What a star. So named as she was born on the 4th July 'American Independence Day'. What a star. I thought she showed great promise as a trialling dog so I travelled a long distance into Dorset to attend classes with the Chants (who own the Quadet affix). Her natural pointing and retrieving was a pleasure, everything coming to hand throughout. Her hunting was a bit and hit and miss but when she took scent she was all instinct. Every new species of game encountered was never a problem. From the start she was steady to the flush and fall of game, but she was never a sitter, preferring to stand to see the game away.
At 30 months old I put her into her first Novice field trial and she won a 4th place and the 'guns award'. She gained a 1st in Novice at only her 3rd N|ovice trial. Swimming became an issue for a while after being asked to cross over a very wide river which was fast flowing after heavy weather the day before. She got half way across and started drifting and got frightened, I could see it in her eyes. She didn't make it across and came back to me. After that she didn't want to even put a toe in the water again. This continued for a while but was eventually resolved when a friend, Beate von Dwingelo Lutten, offered her lake for me to swim in. This encouraged Libby back into the water to swim with me, nearly drowning me I hasten to add, and, as they say, the rest is history. She went on to gain a 1st and a 2nd in an All Aged. She adapted easily from the discipline of a trial to the beating line and on one shoot she was for many years the sole picking up dog, because she was so reliable. She could spot a pricked bird and be away to fetch it with just a glance from me.
I entered open trials for a while and, although she often did nothing wrong, she lacked, in the judges' opinion, the style that was required at that time. She was phenomenal at long distance unseen retrieves, always determined and she never let me down. She produced two litters.
